Unlike Oak, it as a very non-porous, closed grain wood. It takes stain evenly, with minimal grain showing. Maple is a good choice when you want a more uniform color and smooth finish. In its natural color, it is often chosen for more "Contemporary" settings. Pine is softer and will contain solid knots. The knots are left in the furniture to replicate an "antique" effect. The knots typically stain darker than the surrounding wood. Pine looks nice in more "Country" style settings, or where you want the contrast in colors between the wood and its knots.
